OUED NFIFIKH

The Young Journalists for the Environment competition, hosted annually by the esteemed Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), offers a remarkable opportunity for preparatory and qualifying secondary school students to showcase their talents in writing, illustration, and videography. With a focus on sustainable development and environmental protection, this competition challenges young people to gain a deeper understanding of the critical issues facing our planet and their vital role in addressing them

Under the guidance of their dedicated teacher, Malak and Zaynab from Majorelle Private Institute 3 have taken on the challenge of this year’s competition with gusto, using their skills as aspiring journalists to investigate and report on a crucial environmental concern. Their photo reportage article delves into the troubling issue of water pollution in Oud Nfifkh in Mohammedia, shedding light on the devastating impact of human activities on this fragile ecosystem

With their professional approach and rigorous research, these young journalists have demonstrated an impressive commitment to environmental stewardship and a dedication to raising awareness about the urgent need for sustainable practices. Their work serves as a powerful example of the potential of youth to lead the charge in protecting our planet for future generations

Oued Nfifikh is one of the least studied Moroccan rivers, despite its important geographical position in Mohammedia. It flows onto the Sablettes beach, which is always teeming

during the summer with Moroccans from every region. However, it is also one of the most polluted rivers in Morocco. Therefore, the primary aim of this article is to shed light on the seriousness of this phenomenon

The first question that comes to our minds is: What is water pollution? Concisely, water pollution occurs when harmful substances (such as chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, and microorganisms like E. coli and campylobacter) contaminate lakes, seas, gulfs, oceans, and rivers. The human ones dominate the statistics with 90%

Oued Nfifikhriver is now known as the stagnant lake, owing its name to its path change, which stopped it from flowing onto the Sablettes beach, and no new clean water gets to this river. This issue was mainly caused by humans for their excessive use of the river’s water before it actually reaches the region’s residents. With its water not changing and receiving more and more wastewater discharges, the river’s sides are filled with trash, ruining the view. This is not the only consequence, as microorganisms assist in degrading the water, which puts the ecosystems in the area in great danger

Therefore, help should be reached as the river’s state is getting worse day after day. We already recognize the seriousness of its consequences, and that’s why we still have a chance, even if it’s a tiny one. Grabbing onto it will lead us to one of the sustainable development main goals: access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. It is the most basic need for health and well-being. And this is Oued Nfifikhriver’s crucial problem: water pollution. Many studies have shown that the stream is exposed to high pollution, which is mainly organic. Consequently, the water quality is degrading, and ecological and health impacts shall be expected

Everything has its reasons. As Mohammed Sahimi mentioned in his interview with “Niquach21,” the reasons behind this catastrophe can be divided into two main factors: human and natural factors. The local population and civil society have complained about the situation on different social media and in interviews with local news outlets, with the view ruining the beautiful landscape in addition to the bad smell

.Our goal is to get rid of this water pollution in order to save the river as soon as possible before it gets too late. Regret won’t change anything then
